The Bling Ring: My Edit

The Bling Ring (2013)

Inspired by dramatic real-life events, a teenager and his gang of fame-obsessed youths use the Internet to track the whereabouts of famous celebrities, then rob their homes of riches.

Speaking respectfully from personal experience by watching The Bling Ring multiple times, and also as Sofia Coppola fan, this is how I would have edited it otherwise.

  1. The robbery scene had a great extreme long shot that made it look like dolls running around a doll house, but other that the film had no action or adrenaline rush as a spectator. I would have made the robbery scenes a montage of transition shots with the infamous indie sleaze cinematography that was so popular at the time.

  2. The movie had no great dialogue, I understand teenagers aren’t the most poetic, talkative or deep thinking. However where the real events have taken place, the film had a missed opportunity for amazing, vapid one liners from Calabasas citizens. Did Sofia learn nothing from Clueless or Pretty Wild?

  3. Either Sofia didn’t wait out long enough for the trial to resolve and to do more research, but the film could have gone darker than just stealing beautiful clothes. She should have gone deeper and shown the drug use, darker celebrity worship, and the fucked up absent parental discretion of these teenagers.
