The Virgin Suicides
Sofia Coppola's The Virgin Suicides, is hands down one of my favorite films. A film that a lot of my peers judge me for loving, but I think a lot of people my age overlook this cult classic and over analyze it like the fake intellectuals they are. Coppola paints a portrait of how life and death everything is as a teenage girl. Hyperbole is an element used in this film, juxtaposed with a nostalgic and dreamy mise en scene. Trip Fontaine is a babe, introduced by Heart's Magic Man. The soundtrack in this film is a blend of indie rock dream pop, that hypnotizes you with synthesizers and guitar solos. The Lisbon sisters play youthful and beautiful teenagers that drive all the boys crazy it seems. The narrator talks in retrospect, like how a lot of adults reminisce about high school. High school has a certain place in everybody's' psyche that we look through Coppola rose colored film lens. When I think back to my high school daze, life was the size of a fish bowl and the stakes were at it's highest.
